Essential Oil Guide


  
Here is a list of descriptions of the essential oils I use. It outlines fragrance description, therapeutic properties, uses, and contra-indications. If you are not sure about the safety of an essential oil with a particular medical condition, please consult your own therapist or your GP. If you are in any doubt DO NOT USE THE OIL
 
Benzoin: An an intensely rich, sweet, almost vanilla-like scent. Therapeutic properties include antiseptic, anti-depressant, astringent, anti-inflammatory, carminative, cordial, deodorant, diuretic, expectorant, sedative and vulnerary. It can be used for bronchitis, coughs, colds, wounds, acne, eczema, psoriasis, rheumatism, arthritis, scar tissue, circulation, nervous tension, stress, muscle pains, chilblains and rashes. Non-toxic, non-irritant, possible sensitiser. Caution - can make some individuals sleepy.

Bergamot: A fresh sweet-fruity, slightly spicy balsamic scent. Therapeutic properties include analgesic, antidepressant, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-spasmodic, stomachic, calmative, cicatrisant, deodorant, digestive, febrifuge, vermifuge and vulnerary. It can be used for depression, stress, tension, fear, hysteria, SAD, infection (all types including skin), psoriasis and eczema. *PHOTOTOXIC*, otherwise non-toxic and relatively non-irritant.

Cardomon: A sweet-spicy warming oil with woody-balsamic undertones. Therapeutic properties include antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, carminative, cephalic, digestive, diuretic, sialogogue, stomachic and (nerve) tonic. It can be used for colic, cramp, dyspepsia, metal fatigue and nervous strain.*DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*, non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

Cedarwood: A warm camphourous top note with a sweet tencious woody-balsamic undertone. Therapeutic properties include antiseborrhoeic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic, astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, insecticide, sedative and fungicide. It can be used for acne, oily skin, dermatitis, eczema, fungal infections, dandruff, anxiety, nervous tension, arthritis and rheumatism.*DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*, non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitising.

Chamomile, Roman: A warm, sweet, herbaceous scent. Therapeutic properties include analgesic, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, anti-depressant, anti-neuralgic, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, cholagogue, cicatrisant, emmenagogue, febrifuge, hepatic, sedative, nervine, digestive, tonic, sudorific, stomachic, vermifuge and vulnerary. It can be used for PMS, abdominal pain, gall bladder problems, throat infections, allergies, hay fever and asthma, acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, dry and itchy skin. In children it can be used in low concentrations for colic, teething, nappy rash, irritability and insomnia. *DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*, non-toxic, non-irritant, can cause dermatitis in some individuals.

Cinnamon Leaf: A warm-spicy somewhat musky scent. Therapeutic properties include analgesic, antiseptic, antibiotic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cardiac, carminative, emmenagogue, insecticide, stimulant, stomachic, tonic and vermifuge. It can be used for infection of the respiratory tract, rheumatism, arthritis, exhaustion, depression, and period pains. *DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*, relatively non-toxic, possibly irritant, especially to the mucous membranes and should be used in moderation.

Citronella: A fresh, powerful, lemony scent. Therapeutic properties include antiseptic, bactericidal, deodorant, diaphoretic, insecticide, parasitic, tonic and stimulant. It can be used as an effective insecticide/ insect repellent, to help clear the mind, general toning, tonic (body), colds, flu, minor infections, oily skin, fatigue, migraine and excessive perspiration. *DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*, non-toxic, non-irritant, may cause dermatitis in some individuals.

Clary Sage: A sweet, nutty-herbaceous scent. Therapeutic properties include antidepressant, anticonvulsive, antispasmodic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, bactericidal, carminative, deodorant, digestive, emmenagogue, euphoric, hypotensive, nervine, sedative, stomachic, uterine and nerve tonic. It can be used for a myriad of female problems including painful periods, scanty menstruation and relaxation during labour. In the menopause it can help reduce hot flushes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, headaches and dizziness. It is effective in cases of depression, stress, insomnia and tension and is also useful for muscle pains, digestive disorders, kidney diseases and inflammed skin. *DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY* *DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL AS IT CAN EXAGGERATE THE EFFECT*, non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitising.

Clove Bud: A warm sweet-spicy scent with a fresh-fruity top note. Therapeutic properties include analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-neuralgic, carminative, anti-infectious, disinfectant, insecticide, stimulant, stomachic, uterine and tonic. It can be used for acne, bruises, burns and cuts, rheumatism, arthritis, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence, bronchitis and asthma. *DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*. Clove bud can cause skin/mucous membrane irritation and dermatitis in some individuals.

Coriander: A sweet, woody-spicy, slightly musky scent. Therapeutic properties include analgesic, aphrodisiac, antispasmodic, carminative, depurative, deodorant, digestive, carminative, fungicidal, lipolytic, stimulant and stomachic. It can be used for mental fatigue, migraine, tension, nervous weakness, wind and cramps, rheumatism and arthritis pain, muscle spasms, colds and flu. A general cleanser of the body, it removes toxins and fluid wastes. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising: however it can be stupifying in large doses.

Cypress: A smoky, sweet-balsamic and tenacious scent. Therapeutic properties include astringent, antiseptic, antispasmodic, deodorant, diuretic, haemostatic, hepatic, styptic, sudorific, vasoconstrictor, respiratory tonic and sedative. It can be used for irritability, anger, stress, varicose veins, haemorrhoids, oily skin, cellulitis, cramp, oedema, poor ciruclation, rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis, dysmenorrhoea, menopause, and menorrhagia. *DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

Eucalyptus, lemon scented: A strong, fresh, citronella-like scent with a sweet balsamic undertone. Therapeutic properties include analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-neuralgic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, astringent, balsamic, cicatrisant, decongestant, deodorant, depurative, diuretic, expectorant, febrifuge, hypoglycaemic, rubefacient, stimulant, vermifuge and vulnerary. It can be used for headaches, fevers, respiratory tract ailments and muscular aches and pains. It is beneficial to the immune system and is an effective bactericide (esp. against staphylococci). It has a refreshing, stimulating action on the mind and helps to improve concentration. Good for skin infections such as athlete's foot, dandruff, herpes and cut/wounds.*DO NOT USE INTERNALLY* Non-toxic, non-irritant but can cause and sensitisation in certain individuals.

Fennel, sweet: A sweet, anise-like, slightly earthy scent. Therapeutic properties are aperitif, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, depurative, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, galactagogue, laxative, stimulant, stomachic, splenic, tonic and vermifuge. It is helpful for digestive complaints such as flatulence, constipation, colic, nausea/vomiting, anorexia and dyspepsia. It has a toning effect on the spleen and liver. It is also used in cases of obesity and has a diuretic effect that helps to disperse cellulite. It has a cleansing, toning effect on the skin: it is useful for bruises, dull oily skin, and mature skin. It can be used for amenorrhoea and is often found to be benefical during the menopause and in women suffering from insufficient breast milk prodcution. *DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY OR IF YOU HAVE EPILEPSY* Non-irritant, relatively non-toxic (although narcotic in large doses), non-sensitising.

Frankincense (aka Olibanum): A beautiful scent with a fresh top note and a warm ,rich, sweet-balsamic undetone. Therapeutic properties are antiseptic, astringent, carminative, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, sedative, tonic, uterine, vulnerary and expectorant. It soothes and calms the mind, slowing down and deepening breathing and is brilliant for meditating. It is particularly valuable in cases of anxiety, nervous tension and stress-related conditions. It is useful for asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, coughs, catarrh, colds and ‘flu. It can be helpful in cystitis, dysmenorrhoea, leucorrhoea and metrorrhagia. It is said to help rejuvenate dry, ageing skin, it is a skin tonic and is effective on wounds, scars and blemishes. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

Geranium: A heady, green, almost rosy-sweet scent. Therapeutic properties are astringent, haemostatic, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, diuretic, deodorant, haemostatic, styptic, tonic, vermifuge and vulnerary. It is a balancing oil, both for the mind and the body. On the skin it is useful for bruises, broken veins, burns, wounds, ringworm and haemorrhoids. It is also effective for dermatitis, eczema, and congested, oily and mature complexions. Because of its strong smell it is an efficient insect repellent. It is useful in treating cellulitis, oedema, breast engorgement and poor circulation. It is effective for treating menopausal symptoms and PMT and is beneficial in cases of nervous tension, stress-related problems and neuralgia. It stimulates the adrenocortical glands and lymphatic system and has a balancing effect on the hormonal system. *BECAUSE OF ITS HORMONAL BALANCING QUALITIES IT IS ADVISABLE NOT TO USE THIS OIL IN PREGNANCY* Non-toxic, non-irritant and generally non-sensitising – although some hypersensitive individuals may develop contact dermatitis (esp. with Bourbon type).

Ginger: A spicy, warm, fresh, slightly green scent. Therapeutic properties are analgesic, anti-emetic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, cephalic, expectorant, febrifuge, laxative, rubefacient, stimulant, stomachic, sudorific and tonic. It is extremely effective in arthritis, rheumatism, muscular aches and pains, poor circulation, sprains and strains. It is very calming to the digestive system and works well for nausea (esp. travel sickness), diarrhoea, colic/cramp, flatulence, indigestion and loss of appetite. It has a positive influence on the immune system and works well when treating chills, colds, ‘flu and fevers. It is effective in cases of debility and nervous exhaustion. *SLIGHTLY PHOTOTOXIC – MAY CAUSE SENSITISATION IN SOME INDIVIDUALS* Non-toxic and non-irritant (except in high concentrations).

Grapefruit: A fresh, sweet, citrus scent. Therapeutic properties are antidepressant, antiseptic, aperitif, diuretic, disinfectant, lymphatic stimulant, tonic and anti-infectious. A fabulous oil for treating cellulite, obesity and water retention. It is a booster of the immune system and works well in treating chills, clods and ‘flu. It tones the skin and tissues and is effective for treating acne and congested, oily skin. It promotes hair growth. It is very useful in the treatment of depression, nervous exhaustion, performance stress and headaches. It clears toxins from the body and is useful for muscle fatigue and is great for body rubs, both pre and post exercise. Non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitising and non-phototoxic.

Jasmine: A beautiful oil with an intensely rich, warm, floral scent. Therapeutic properties are anti-depressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, anti-spasmodic, cicatrisant, expectorant, galactagogue, parturient, sedative and uterine. A superb oil for the skin it is effective in treating both dry and greasy skins and soothes irritated and sensitive skin well. It is used for treating dysmenorrhoea, uterine disorders, eases labour. It is valuable in treating sexual problems such as frigidity, impotence and premature ejaculation because of its deeply relaxing qualities. It produces a felling of optimism, confidence and euphoria and is therefore excellent for treating depression, anxiety, apathy, nervous exhaustion and stress-related disorders. It is also a helpful tool when trying to break addictions. It has great value when treating catarrh, coughs, laryngitis and hoarseness, especially when these conditions are long-standing. Non-toxic, non-irritant and generally non-sensitising – although allergic reactions have been reported in some individuals.

Lavender: A sweet, floral, herbaceous scent with a woody undertone. Perhaps one of the best known, versatile and most frequently used essential oils its therapeutic properties are antiseptic, analgesic, anti-convulsant, anti-depressant, anti-rheumatic, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, bactericide, carminative, cholagogue, cicatrisant, cordial, cytophylactic, decongestant, deodorant, diuretic, emmenagogue, hypotensive, nervine, rubefacient, sedative, sudorific and vulnerary. It tones and revitalises the skin and is very useful for treating acne, spots, cuts, wounds, burns, stings, varicose veins, herpes and warts. It is effective in arthritis, rheumatism, poor circulation, high blood pressure and nosebleeds. Asthma, bronchitis, throat infections, catarrh and whooping cough are all helped considerably by this oil as are colds, ‘flu, fever and infections. It is probably one of the most effective oil for alleviating insomnia and also helps depression, nervous tension and stress-related conditions as well as headaches, migraine, high blood pressure, PMT and shock. Muscle strains and aches, lumbago and rheumatism are all benefitted by this oil. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

Lemongrass: A fresh, grassy-citrus scent with an earthy undertone. Therapeutic properties are analgesic, anti-depressant, antimicrobial. antipyretic, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal, carminative, deodorant, diuretic, febrifuge, fungicidal, galactagogue, insecticidal, nervine, nervous system sedative and tonic. It is extremely effective in treating athlete’s foot, pediculosis and scabies. It helps calm acne and is great for open pores as it is a tissue toner. It is an effective deodorant and is useful for excessive perspiration. It is an efficient insect repellent (esp. fleas, ticks, lice) and can be used on pets as well as people. It is boosts the parasympathetic nervous system and stimulates glandular secretions making it an effective tool in fighting infectious diseases and also in rehabilitation after illness. It tones slack tissue and muscles and aids poor circulation. It is a revitalising and energising oil which helps headaches, nervous exhaustion and stress-related conditions and can even relieve the symptoms of jetlag.*CAN BE PHOTOTOXIC DEPENDING ON TYPE OF EXTRACTION* Non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitising.

Litsea Cubeba (aka May Chang): An intense, lemony, fresh-fruity scent not unlike lemongrass, but sweeter and less powerful. Therapeutic properties are astringent, antispasmodic, bechic, carminative, cephalic, diaphoretic, diuretic, emollient, nervine, sedative and tonic. This is another effective oil for acne, dermatitis, spots and greasy skin and it is also very valuable for treating excessive perspiration, as a deodorant, and an insect repellent. It is useful for treating flatulence and indigestion and has been used in the past during epidemics for sanitising as it is an excellent antiseptic. It is uplifting and energising and is useful in treating anxiety, depression and stress-related disorders. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

 
Marjoram, Sweet: A warm, woody, spicy-camphoraceous scent. Therapeutic properties are analgesic, anti-spasmodic, anaphrodisiac, antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal, carminative, cephalic, cordial, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, fungicidal, hypotensive, laxative, nervine, sedative, stomachic, vasodilator and vulnerary. It is tranquil oil effective in treating anxiety and stress-related disorders and helps to calm hyperactive individuals. It is useful for rheumatism, arthritis and lumbago as well as sprains and strains as it has excellent muscle relaxant and pain killing properties. It works well for colic, constipation, dyspepsia and flatulence. It soothes bronchitis and asthma and has a beneficial action on colds and ‘flu. It is a general relaxant and is helpful for headaches, migraines and insomnia and can reduce hypertension. It can also be used to treat amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, leucorrhoea and PMT, but can lessen sexual desire. *DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*. Non-toxic, non-sensitising, possibly toxic in high concentrations.

Myrrh: A warm, rich, spicy-balsamic scent. Therapeutic properties are anti-catarrhal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, astringent, balsamic, carminative, cicatrisant, emmenagogue, expectorant, fungicidal, sedative, digestive and pulmonary stimulant, stomachic, tonic, uterine and vulnerary. It is wonderful oil for chapped and cracked skin, bed sores and skin ulcers, boils, eczema, athlete’s foot, ringworm and weeping wounds. It is very effective for mature skin and wrinkles. It has a warming, drying, opening nature which makes it good for asthma, coughs, bronchitis and catarrh. It is useful for treating mouth ulcers, gum infections/disease, sore throats and laryngitis. Diarrhoea, dyspepsia, flatulence and loss of appetite are often helped by this oil and haemorrhoids can be relieved by topical application of low percentage dilutions. It is effective for treating amenorrhoea, leucorrhoea, pruritis and thrush infections.*DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY*. Non irritant, non-sensitising, possibly toxic in high concentrations.

 
Orange, Sweet: A sweet fresh-fruity scent which sometimes lacks tenacity. A sweet, fresh-fruity scent which sometimes lacks tenacity. Therapeutic properties are antiseptic, anti-depressant, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, carminative, diuretic, cholagogue, sedative and tonic. A marvellous oil for dull, oily complexions this oil supports collagen formation in the skin. It is an effective diuretic and is useful for water retention and obesity. It is active on the immune system and alleviates cold and ‘flu symptoms as well as helping to eliminate toxins from the body. It is useful in treating nervous tension and stress-related conditions and works well on individuals with “nervous” stomachs, constipation, dyspepsia and spasm. It is very effective for lifting the spirits and is said to help children sleep.*POTENTIALLY PHOTOTOXIC*. Generally non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising (although limonene has been found to cause dermatitis in a few individuals).

Palmerosa: A sweet, floral, rosy-geranium like scent. Therapeutic properties are antiseptic, antiviral, bactericide, cytophylactic, digestive, febrifuge and hydrating. This oil is fabulous for the skin as it moisturises and balances hydration levels and stimulates cell regeneration. It regulates sebum production and is valuable for use with acne, dermatitis and minor skin infection; preventing scarring and rejuvenating and regenerating the skin. It is a wonderful oil for mature skins, helping reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It is has been found to very effective in anorexia nervosa, digestive atonia and intestinal infections (as it acts on pathogenic intestinal flora). It calms the mind, yet has an uplifting effect and is effective for treating both physical and nervous exhaustion and stress-related problems. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

Patchouli: A sweet, rich, herbaceous-earthy scent - a real "love it or hate it" oil this one! Therapeutic properties are antidepressant, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, deodorant, diuretic, febrifuge, fungicide, insecticide, sedative and tonic. This oil is an outstanding tissue regenerator and helps stimulate the growth of new skin cells, it promotes fast healing and helps to prevent scarring and is very effective on rough, cracked and dry skin. It is also highly effective against skin infections, insect bites, athlete’s foot, dandruff, weeping eczema, dermatitis and impetigo. It helps reduce open pores and wrinkles. It as excellent diuretic properties and is effective at breaking up cellulite. It is a balancing and grounding oil which is helpful in cases of depression, anxiety and stress-related disorders. It is a passionate and romantic oil which is very useful in treating frigidity and sexual dysfunction. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

Petitgrain: A fresh-floral citrus scent with woody-herbaceous undertones. Therapeutic properties are antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, anti-depressant, deodorant, sedative and nervine. It is an excellent oil for toning greasy skin and helps clear spots and acne. It is useful in cases of excessive perspiration and makes an effective deodorant. It relieves dyspepsia and flatulence. It is a relaxing oil which helps with panic, anger, anxiety, depression, insomnia, nervous exhaustion and stress-related disorders. It is also a valuable aid during convalescence after illness. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising, unlike most citrus oils it is non-phototoxic.

Rosemary: A strong, fresh, minty-herbaceous scent with a woody-balsamic undertone. Therapeutic properties are analgesic, antidepressant, astringent, carminative, cephalic, cholagogue, cordial, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, hepatic, hypertensive, nervine, rubefacient, stimulant, sudorific and tonic. This oil has many and varied uses. It is great for many skins conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, acne, dandruff and it regulates seborrhoea. It promotes hair growth, controls a greasy hair and stimulates the scalp. It is an excellent insect repellent (esp. lice) and helps eradicate scabies. Its antiseptic action makes it especially fitting for use in intestinal infections, diarrhoea, colitis, dyspepsia, flatulence, liver disorders, jaundice and hypercholesterolemia. It helps with pain of rheumatism, arthritis and gout as well as general muscular aches and pains and is useful for arteriosclerosis, poor circulation and varicose veins. It is said to help with palpitations. It is used for a wide range of respiratory conditions including asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough and is also an effective immune booster during colds, ‘flu and infections. It is a valuable oil for use in dysmenorrhoea and leucorrhoea and helps reduce water retention, especially that associated with menstruation. Because of its distinct action on the brain and the central nervous system it is fantastic for clearing the mind, reducing mental fatigue and improving memory, making it a superb oil to use when studying for exams. It is useful in treating debilitating disorders, headaches, neuralgia and low blood pressure and is successful in alleviating nervous and stress-related disorders.*DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY OR IF YOU HAVE EPILESPY OR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE* Non-toxic, non-irritant (in dilution only and non-sensitising.

Rosewood: A very sweet, woody-floral scent with a spicy undertone. Therapeutic properties are anti-depressant, mildly analgesic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, bactericidal, cephalic, deodorant, insecticide and stimulant (immune system), tonic. This oil is another superb tissue regenerator and is suitable for all skin types ranging from greasy through to sensitive/dry. It works wonders for acne, dermatitis, scars, wounds, and wrinkles although it does not have any dramatic curative powers. It stimulates the immune system and is helpful for colds, coughs, ‘flu, fever and infections. It will lift your spirits and has a balancing action effect on the mind and body alleviating nervous and stress-related disorders, headaches and nausea. Because of its aphrodisiac properties it can be of assistance when treating sexual dysfunction, especially impotence and frigidity. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

Vetiver: A deep, smoky, earthy-woody scent with persistent sweet undertone. Therapeutic properties are antiseptic, aphrodisiac, cicatrisant, nervine, rubefacient, sedative, tonic, and vulnerary. An antiseptic oil which has a positive effect on acne, oily skin and wounds/cuts. It is useful for treating rheumatism, arthritis, sprains, stiffness and general muscular aches and pains. It is deeply relaxing and is superb for treating debility, depression, insomnia, anxiety and nervous/ stress-related disorders. It calms and soothes the mind and helps to dispel anger, hysteria and irritability. Non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising.

Ylang Ylang: An intensely sweet, soft, floral-blasamic slightly spicy scent - a good quality oil will have a creamy top note. Therapeutic properties are antidepressant, antiseborrhoeic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, hypotensive, nervine and sedative. This oil is fabulous for general skin care and by balancing the secretion of sebum it works just as well on over-dry or over-oily skins. It makes lovely hair rinse which stimulates the scalp therefore promoting hair grow. It is effective for controlling high blood pressure, tachycardia, palpitations and hyperpnoea. It is said to “soothe and inhibit anger born of frustration” and has a euphoric and sedative effect which helps alleviate anxiety, tension, shock, fear, panic and insomnia, whilst the aphrodisiac qualities make it another oil which is useful for treating sexual dysfunction such as impotence and frigidity. Non-toxic, non-irritant, a few cases of sensitisation have been reported. This oil must be used in moderation as its pungent scent can cause headaches and nausea in some individuals.
